The Nautch girls remained an importunate fixture within the realm of popular culture within the country and beyond even as they remained scoially shunned. Their photographs were as sought after as those of the royal members and were seen on match box covers to widely circulated postcards. Photography as a documentative apparatus therefore captured society's obsession for voyeuron one hand and on the other stands witness to the consequent empowerment of women in acknowledging their beauty, strength and sexuality. The artist here represents herself as a nautch girl performing on street along with her musical posse.
The character photographs of the artist in these series have been shot by Ms Rosy Potter of Wimbledon School of Art with whom the artist had collaborated.
